Tips for preparing your Academic CV

Call for Applications: Academy in Exile Fellowships

Six Fellowships for Scholars from Turkey for 24 months in Berlin or Essen to join the Academy in Exile. Application deadline: November 15, 2017

The Institute of Turkish Studies at the University of Duisburg-Essen, the Berlin-based Forum Transregionale Studien and the Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut Essen (KWI) invite scholars from or in Turkey to join the

ACADEMY IN EXILE

with funding support from the Volkswagen Foundation. Eligible are scholars from all fields in the humanities, law, economics and social sciences who are at risk or in exile because of their academic work and/or civic engagement with human rights and the pursuit of academic freedom. The fellowships provide scholars with the opportunity to reestablish their scholarship in Germany and work on a research project of their own choosing in a multidisciplinary environment. Fellows will contribute to the research agenda and intellectual profile of the Academy in Exile generally.

The Academy in Exile provides a forum for a continued engagement with questions of religious and ethnic diversity, gender and sexuality, and civic engagement for peace, democracy, citizenship and human rights. With this first funding round for scholars from Turkey, this initiative intends to stimulate Turkish Studies and promote wider debate about authoritarian movements and threats to academic freedom.

Applicants should have a completed PhD and can be at any subsequent career stage. The selection of fellows will be based on both academic merit and risk assessment. Eligible are scholars at risk who are residing in Turkey or have been in exile for no more than three years.

With this first call for applications, the Academy in Exile will offer six two-year fellowships. Fellows of the Academy in Exile will be associated with one of two main host institutions—three fellows will be assigned to the Forum Transregionale Studien in Berlin and three to the Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut Essen. Fellows are expected to reside in Berlin or Essen respectively, to participate in the academic life of their host institutions, and to help shape the activities and program of the Academy in Exile. The working language of the Academy in Exile is English.

The two-year fellowships will begin between January 15 and March 15, 2018. Organizational support regarding visas, insurance, and housing will be provided. The monthly stipend amounts to 2,500 EUR plus a family allowance of 250 EUR.

Life-changing opportunity for a talented refugee student

Balliol College is delighted to invite applications for its so-called ‘refugee scholarship’: the Balliol Students’ Scholarship, which intends to support a student ordinarily resident in the UK with either refugee status or leave to remain in the UK on the grounds of humanitarian protection in studying for an undergraduate degree at the University of Oxford commencing October 2018.
The Scholarship aims to provide a talented undergraduate with a fully funded opportunity to study for a degree without disruption, so that they can achieve their full academic potential: it covers full tuition fees and a full maintenance award, sufficient to cover accommodation, food and other living costs.
Established in 2017 by the JCR and MCR Committees in conjunction with the College, it was made possible by the generosity of current Balliol students and Balliol’s Governing Body, with over 80% of the student body committing to support the scholarship with a regular gift of £4 a term. The money raised has been matched by Old Members around the world, whose regular gifts to Balliol’s undesignated and Student Support funds are used to provide significant additional funding for the Scholarship. We are extremely grateful to all the students, Old Members and friends who have come together to help make this scholarship a reality.
‘Oxford has been, and continues to be, a life-changing experience for many students here; and the students would like nothing more than to have enabled a scholar to come to Oxford and be enriched by everything it offers, from serious debates to a supportive and intellectually stimulating community of people from many different cultures,’ says Hubert Au, President of Balliol’s JCR.
Those wishing to apply must first complete a Balliol College ‘Expression of Interest’ form, in order to signal to the College your wish to apply for the Scholarship. This will also make you eligible for funding assistance for the application process if required. A full university application must then be submitted through the UCAS system by 15 October 2017. For full information about the scholarship, what it covers and who is eligible, please see the ‘further details’ on this page.
With the deadline of 15 October fast approaching, we ask all Balliol people with an interest in seeing a refugee student benefit from this life-changing opportunity to share this link on social media and to draw it to the attention of schools and other relevant organisations.
